Module overview
The Google Analytics integration was rebuilt with the introduction of GA4. The logic follows the Google guidance and most of the “magic†happens within Google’s product, Google Tag Manager.
Website Logic
In simple terms we provide various details/data about the customer journey and we indicate to GTM the relevant event taking place e.g. “AddToCart†or “ViewItemâ€. This is where our involvement stops and it is up to Google to pick up on this data, analyze it and report it in GA4.
Google Tag Manager
In order for the data to be picked up from the site and for Google to process it we simply configure the preset GA4 tags for the E-commerce events and link them to the relevant GA4 Measurement ID provided by the customer.
Once this is done we can “Preview†from GTM to confirm the events are triggering as expected with the relevant data. As long as this looks ok we expect to see data coming through to GA4, albeit with a delay.
Responsibilities, maintenance & issues
Setup
The customer must follow the Knowledge-base document meticulously to ensure all steps are completed otherwise the tracking will not work. This setup process and the logic behind are identical for all sites.
Google Analytics tracking / reporting issues
It is the customer’s responsibility to maintain the Google Analytics as they see fit in order to get the relevant results and reports.
Jonas Sports' responsibility is to ensure the data is available for tracking in Google Tag Manager which can easily be tested using the GTM Preview feature as shown in the Knowledge-base.
Anything past this is outside of Jonas remit or control and should be enquired with Google themselves. This includes tracking differences, imbalances, assistance with GA Reports etc. Jonas will not be able to support this as it is a 3rd Party Product which requires Analytics Specialist expertise.
[Image from previous system]We strongly encourage all Google Analytics users to familiarize themselves and make use of the Google Analytics Help Centre.
Considerations
By default/definition Google Analytics data was never going to be entirely accurate and susceptible to Ad-Blockers interfering along with other scenarios where the tracking cannot trigger. Below article is just an example of many going into more details about this.
Another recent change that is playing a big factor in this is a Privacy update released by Apple which prevents any Google functionality from running when Safari Advanced Protection is enabled or Incognito Mode used. With the current Javascript based solution there is no way around this.
